So here's an important question to ask: Do you need to remove these foods from your diet, or can you make them count? Can you make desserts and sweets become part of the important foods you eat?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, look at your current sweet intake. Is it primarily sodas, candy, and other refined carbohydrates? Then look at the whole foods available to you, and ask yourself if you can make changes where dessert and sweets are concerned, so that you are using whole foods instead of processed foods. The answer is yes, you can. A positive behavioral change process like this will enhance not only the quality of your body but also of your mind, emotions, spirit or soul, and environment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Changing old habits for new ones poses a significant challenge for most people. However, if you use the right combination of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins from pure, whole foods at each meal, these foods become fun foods and no longer pose a behavioral challenge. You see no problem and, therefore, no need to contemplate change. You might say, "There is no problem" or "I don't have to fix what's not broken."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are no actions you can take at this point since you see no problem or need for change. You may or may not later get a wake-up call and move to the next stage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stage 2: Contemplation&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Characterized by the thought, "Is change really beneficial?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You may be saying, "Prove to me that a change is needed."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At this level, you have some knowledge of your disease-promoting behaviors and may be considering making some beneficial changes. You have not yet made a pledge because you are still considering the advantages and disadvantages of a major behavior change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Actions you can take: Consider making a plan for initiating change. Keep it simple. For example, you may love to eat at McDonald's three times a week. You should already know that this kind of food, in excess, is not good for achieving and maintaining optimum health. These feelings will drive you to achieve success -- enjoy them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Actions you can take: Continue to follow up with those assisting you with this change. Their support can be pivotal in linking you to any additional information and resources you may need to maintain and strengthen your convictions that you can make the desired changes. In-person support is best, but you can get good support by phone or Internet if necessary. For example, you might want to eat fast food only twice a week, then drop down to once a week, and also decide that if you eat fast food, you won't "super size" it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stage 5: Ongoing Maintenance&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Characterized by the thought, "It's difficult to think of how I was before."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It may be difficult for you to remember what your behaviors were like before you became dedicated to your good health. When you have sustained the new behaviors for six months to a year, you can consider that you have graduated to ongoing maintenance. When you reach this level, you know the benefits of the behavior change because you can feel and experience it firsthand. At this level, there is only one goal left to focus on: prevention of a setback.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Actions you can take: consider defining some long-term behavior maintenance approaches to prevent reverting to old behaviors. For example, develop a support system, review past journals and logs, keep up with body composition tests, be proud of your improved health, and focus on how you feel and look now versus how you previously felt and looked.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stage 6: Relapse or Termination&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Characterized by the thoughts "How can I get back on track?" or "Am I done with this now?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Relapse is common, and being prepared to start over again is important. If you have relapsed, see if you learned something new about yourself and about the process of changing behavior. For instance, ask yourself, "I did it for six days, so what made that work?" Shift your focus from failure to whatever promotes problem solving. Get the support you need to re-engage in the change process. Set realistic goals to prevent becoming discouraged and take positive steps toward that behavior change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alternatively, you have conquered the problem and no longer feel the temptation to return to your old, poor behavior. Congratulations! Typically, confidence in success peaks after a year, but temptation may linger for another year or two. The controllable risk factors for atherosclerosis are high cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;High Cholesterol&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The number one controllable risk factor for having atherosclerosis is having high cholesterol. High cholesterol is indirectly dangerous because having it increases your risk of developing heart disease. If your cholesterol levels are high, lowering them can add many disease-free years to your life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Blood Cholesterol Levels&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In order to know if your levels are high, you need to have your blood cholesterol levels checked. Every adult should have their cholesterol checked at least every 5 years. You should have it checked more often if you have already been diagnosed with high cholesterol.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A complete blood cholesterol test is called a lipid panel or a lipoprotein profile. Before the test you must fast for at least 9 hours.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The lipid panel checks your total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol and triglycerides (fat in your blood).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lipid Panel Results&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your goal should be to have a:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dL&lt;br /&gt;LDL less than 100 mg/dL&lt;br /&gt;HDL greater than 60 mg/dL&lt;br /&gt;Triglycerides less than 150 mg/dL &lt;br /&gt;What To Do&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If your total cholesterol, LDL and/or triglycerides are too high or your HDL is too low, you should discuss treatment options with your physician.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Depending on your risk factors, your physician may suggest lifestyle changes and possibly prescribe medication(s).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lifestyle Changes&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can actively improve your cholesterol levels with lifestyle changes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. She knew that once again Adam had been left out of their games. He was endlessly taunted about his weight by the other children and had very few friends at school. At 8 years old Adam was already 40 pounds heavier than the other children.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Epidemic&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over 9 million children ages 6 to 19 years old are overweight or obese. In a frightening trend, this number has tripled since 1980. In this same time period, childhood obesity has doubled for preschoolers (2-5 years old) and adolescents (12-19 years).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This problem is not limited to the United States but is a growing epidemic in many countries. In a country that is seemingly obsessed with weight issues we should be declaring this issue a national emergency.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ignoring the Issue&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Believing that children may merely have "baby fat" or grow out of their weight problems is a fallacy. Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This number increases to 80 percent if one or more parent is overweight or obese.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UCSF researcher Robert Lustig, MD, professor of clinical pediatrics at UCSF Children's Hospital notes in a review of obesity research that the Western diet is the key reason for childhood obesity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lustig offers that our high calorie, low fiber diets promote hormonal imbalances that encourage children to overeat. Other factors commonly attributed to the rise in obesity include frequent fast food dining, too little physical activity at school and home, larger portion sizes, and lack of sleep. Another key factor cited in numerous studies, and perhaps the most important - parents.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Parents&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Parents play an important role in the growth, development, and socialization of children (Darling and Steinberg 1993). Additionally, overweight parents may pass on a combination of genetic predisposition to becoming overweight and unhealthy eating habits to their children. An Australian study showed that fathers who were permissive or disengaged were more likely to have children with a higher body mass index (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/70064.php).Obesity in children is far more than a vanity issue. Along with the rise in childhood obesity is a dramatic increase in diseases and conditions that were previously more prevalent in adults.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Health Problems&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A new study revealed that obesity in adolescents is related with reduced heart functions and excessive cardiac mass. Combined with the tendency to become hypertensive this is a life threatening issue.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Being overweight puts a greater strain on the still developing bodies of children. Childhood obesity puts children at greater risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, joint problems, sleep disorders and more. One in three obese children has excess fat in their liver. This excess fat could lead to hepatitis, cirrhosis or liver failure. Not to mention the emotional toll on children who are subjected to teasing and/or isolation by their peers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Seek Medical Help&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your physician can determine if your child's weight is healthy. The doctor will use a growth chart to compare your child's BMI to other children of the same age and sex.Cutoff points on these growth charts, established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), help identify overweight children:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BMI-for-age between 85th and 95th percentiles - at risk of overweight &lt;br /&gt;BMI-for-age over 95th percentile - overweight &lt;br /&gt;Your doctor will also evaluate your family history, your child's calorie intake and eating habits, other health conditions, and activity level.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dr. Kal&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was an overweight child and an obese teen. The big kind, the small kind, and everything in between. But most of all, I hate the weight loss roller coaster. This is probably because I can never seem to get off of it. Up and down, round and round I goâ€¦ where Iâ€™ll stop nobody seems to know. Thatâ€™s the biggest problem: while the man-made kind only lasts a few minutes, the weight loss kind seems to last forever. &lt;br /&gt;So why canâ€™t I lose the weight permanently? Some would chalk it up to lack of self control. Iâ€™d go with that explanation except that I seem to have extreme self control in other parts of my life. Iâ€™m not an excessive shopper. I stick to my budget every month. My house is fairly clean. I rarely drink. So lack of self control doesnâ€™t seem to jive with other areas of my life. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Irritated with myself, I decided to go to the doctor. When she told me I had a medical issue, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) that causes me to be more at risk of gaining weight I thought â€œGreat! Now I can take a pill to get over it.â€ Wrong. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is no cure for PCOS. Rather the solution is to find a new way of living that allows my body to operate in the most efficient way it can. Lucky for me, the doctor had some information for me to read on the subject. I also went home and did additional research. One of the best places Iâ€™ve found for information on PCOS is at insulitelabs.com. Hereâ€™s what I learned from them:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;â€¢ Women with PCOS suffer from a condition known as insulin resistance which causes the body to produce inadequate amounts of insulin to effectively convert food to energy. One side effect is the body craves carbs which can lead to weight gain. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;â€¢ A low-carb diet has proved to be effective not only in weight loss programs but also in helping to control the production of insulin in the pancreas. But keep in mind that females of normal weight and lean women can also have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and insulin resistance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;â€¢ Exercise is a main component of dealing with the symptoms of PCOS. Exercise increases the sensitivity of your cell walls to insulin for the vital conversion of glucose to energy; it boosts metabolism, burns calories and helps to level out the production of insulin the pancreas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;â€¢ Choose a balanced, healthy diet that doesnâ€™t include refined carbohydrates, like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, corn and refined sugars. Avoid artificial sweeteners which can raise insulin levels. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;â€¢ Avoid stimulants like caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. Even over-the-counter cold medications can contain stimulants, causing spikes in insulin production and release.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;â€¢ Your doctor may need to address collateral issues such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol issue with medication until they come under control naturally with your weight loss and healthier lifestyle. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;â€¢ Find a PCOS support group to chat with women who are going through the same experience as you are as it can be frustrating to find common ground with others around you who can lose weight and/or maintain it more easily.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So the bottom line is that I have to go farther than most people to keep the weight in check. I need to crave discipline in diet and exercise, not carbs. I need to seek balance in my life, not in junk food. And most of all, after all of the self reflection and research, Iâ€™ve learned that I actually am in control of this roller coaster ride. While I have cut back somewhat, I'm not able - and I won't - cut carbohydrates from my diet completely. A gal has to have a little bit of comfort! So after I began my diet, I took a closer look at the wrap. And I'm not talking about the lettuce wrap, either. All wraps are good, but sorry to say, most are wrong for my particular program. Unfortunately, it's more expensive and is usually beyond my budget. But, it will fill you up and satisfy you like nothing else. Always make sure that you buy 100% whole wheat or whole grain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cut down on the white potatoes. I never thought I would believe this one, being the potato lover that I am. But, I have cut my potato consumption down to only two or three times per month. And I do not dare eat them for breakfast. I found that out the hard way and had issues with my sugar levels all day. When I do eat a white potato, it's after I have food in my system and later on in the day. A sweet potato is a great alternate and provides beta carotene, fiber, and vitamin A.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Whole Wheat Pasta. I have switched to eating to 100% whole wheat pasta. It's better for your blood sugar level; and it contains more fiber than traditional white pasta. If you are really watching your carbohydrates, there are lower carb pastas for you, like Dreamfield's pasta. Since I don't follow a low carb diet specifically, I only watch them, I can't give you numbers. That is for you to decide. Enjoy pasta with out feeling guilty.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Got a craving for peanut butter? Don't eat the peanut butter on a cracker. Once you start with crackers, you will find it difficult to stop. Try eating the peanut butter on a slice of apple or celery instead. Mixing the peanut butter with a sweet and tart apple will tickle your mouth. For an even better idea, instead of the peanut butter, eat a handful of your favorite peanuts or nuts and a piece of fresh fruit instead.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once you've cut some of the carbs, or simply changed the type of carbohydrate you consume, you'll have less craving for them.
